Thoughts: August Rains
For me there is a disconnect between August and rain. Rain is a tiding of spring, nurturingly refreshing life from it’s winter slumber. It’s also a respite after a sweltering day in late-June when the oppressing humidity gives way to rain’s tumultuous thunder and dewey drops. But August just doesn’t make sense.
Trodding through my soggy garden this evening I found myself making this disconnect. Fall is a time of harvest. Dry weather seems logical, doesn’t it? As farmers prepare to reap the harvest, dry air and weeks without rain are common bedtime prayers, no doubt. As gardeners ready the garden for winter and take on the task of planting bulbs, drier soils and dwindling plant growth is a sincere hope. Tulips, daffodils, and crocus would greatly appreciate the cool dryness of autumn soil. At the rate my garden is going, they may have to wait awhile.
