Exotica

I’ve always believed there’s value in short-term affairs with annual and tropical plants that track the calendar in one fell, life-giving swoop. This kind of work runs opposite most of my creative practice, which is precisely why I feel like doing it. It’s improvisational and intuitive, hardly linked to the nature of a place. The results can be wildly inspirational. If it all works out, smashing. If it fails, there’s always a frost to cover your tracks.

My husband David and I created a concept for a new garden here at Three Oaks called Exotica. The 2022 iteration took form in 137 containers that stretched along the length of our front terrace. These are images from that season featuring a mashup of salvias, Sansevieria, Hedychium and various anthropogenic annual species from around the world with perhaps marginal ornamental, but maximal intellectual interest.
